CPAP Masks Facts
Importance of a Good Fitting Mask:
If your CPAP mask doesn't fit well, you are less likely to use it! Probably the most important factor in the success of your CPAP therapy is to have a mask that fits you well. At Alamo Respiratory, one of our experienced respiratory therapist will help find a mask that is best suited for your face and needs.
We stock about 50 different mask designs in all of the sizes available. This gives our respiratory therapists unlimited options in finding the perfect mask for you. We feel so confident in the success of our fittings, that we will offer a no-cost return of your mask if you aren't satisfied with the fit within 7 days of being fitted. We will try masks until you are comfortable!
One thing to remember is that new CPAP mask technology is being developed and released every day. If you have an older CPAP mask design, it may be time to try one of the later models.
All of the masks are standardized so that any mask will connect with any machine. There are however a few masks that are not recommended for use with Auto CPAP machines. Please discuss this issue with one of our respiratory therapists before making a mask change with an Auto CPAP machine.
Importance of Replacing Masks Regularly: Medicare & most insurances allow for mask cushion replacement every three (3) months and complete mask system replacement every six (6) months. CPAP manufacturers and vendors suggest these replacement schedules as well.
In our experience, most mask cushions begin to deteriorate after about six months of use. The silicone eventually becomes too soft to hold a seal and headgear straps must be tightened more and more to get the same quality seal. In addition, masks collect bacteria over time. Replenishing parts and mask itself on a regular basis is critical to your health, comfort and overall success of your therapy.
We strongly suggest replacing cushions and pillows as soon as they start to soften. Air leaks may reduce the effectiveness of CPAP therapy and headgear that is too tight may cause facial sores at pressure points. You can also replace the headgear of your mask if it is stretched out or the Velcro worn out.
